Awesome post! I never thought about the majority and minority points you made about networking but I completely agree that I would say the minority is definitely more successful.

As a recruiter myself, my job is all about networking. Sometimes candidates profiles on LinkedIn don't always match their resumes. I personally started my own database for my company where I keep resumes for future positions that open up. What I learned is that this is how to build a pipeline of candidates and at the same time building my own network. Just because a candidate you speak with now is not the right fit doesn't mean that conversation needs to be a waste. The next position that we get, could be for that person.

One other point to make is that transparency is key for me as a recruiter but I also think when networking this tool can be useful as well. There is no reason to lead someone on to say that you think you can help them if you cant. When you tell someone that you will help, try and follow through because that person is probably waiting on you. Even if the follow up with them is that the connection didn't work out that is okay. Sometimes the answer is no.

Love this Melissa! Thanks for posting such a thoughtful note - always incredible hearing the story from the recruiter end! Adding "Sometimes candidates profiles on LinkedIn don't always match their resumes." to my long list of topics! :)

Thank you, Aleksey, for helping people who are already "off the beaten track," and trying to fall off a new wagon. We all have idioms and idiosyncracies, but it's "intuitive" that meeting in the middle makes beautiful magic (that some bigger wallets than Ours say can be seen from Space!)

LinkedIn is a very challenging space to navigate, but I'm thankful for your "little pond" of people, who are all working to show off how none of us are "little" for too long. Life is short... but sometimes a resume that's shorter can leave a little bit to the imagination. Could be a competitive advantage, or a federal liability- but proving proofs by patience rather than paternity is sometimes a different stroke, for folks like us, out of water in the Desert (:

Definitely under promise and over-deliver! And, don't waste other people's time if you can not help. Love it, Melissa. Great insight!

Insightful and inspiring! Do you have any tips for dealing with the "disadvantages" that come with using a recruiter when an employer mentions the recruiting fee?

In my experience, it can make for a bit of awkward conversation, but nothing that's insurmountable!

This is a great post. I think networking is a 24-hour a day gig as you never know when you'll come across your next prospect, job, client, etc. Always have an open mind as people have long memories and remember if folks are genuinely interested or just going through the motions.

Well done Aleksey!

Aleksey - obviously you are an "old soul" leader and I am very honored to have found your blog. I am on the downside of my professional career, and continue to contemplate stepping aside and spending 100% of my time focused on my wife and daughter - however, that being said I found some solid purpose the past 1.5 years volunteering my skill set with a local non-profit in Phoenix, Arizona.

What I have found in my lifetime is learning that networking is not about "me" and this notion of "taking" and 99% don't get that especially in today's world of social platforms. My older self, would remind my younger self the goal of networking is to "provide" and deliver a win - to the other party. - in a congruent, aligned theme to what we share in common. You want to add value, both professionally and personally and develop a winning relationship - execute wins for others, and then make your ask. It takes lots of additional work, outside and on-top-of our hectic professional responsibilities and demands - but it is 100% amazing to see the results unfold over the months and years with this type of perspective and actions ! ! !

What an amazing blog, and the quality of what I am reading is a pure reflection of the quality of individual - that is Aleksey!

Although, not a topic of most - but I am available to answer any all questions pertaining to non-profits - especially focused on community development, real estate and financial lending.

This is a perfect post for someone like Aleksey to author ;-) I don't know many other people who could write this and not come across as preachy (and perhaps even a tad hypocritical). The cool thing about making time and energy for others, is that it feels good for yourself as well!

If there is anyone looking for work as a software developer or automation engineer, I'd love to recommend you to Brix Software, a branch of Cross River Bank. A really great company (I'm very new there), actively hiring!

Hello, Fellow Flourishing Friends:

I’m honored to finally be able to lend at least an online presence, and hopefully more, to my dear friend Aleksey's newest nascent venture.

Having just left a gathering of Sisters and Brothers in pursuit of Freedom, I offer my servile scribing services to you all, to render in a medium of your choosing. My professional life is nothing if not a supporting role, a foolish foil who is good only for learning lessons, and adapting to the unstated needs and bullish goals of an optimistic employer.

On paper, I write patents. For companies and the engineers that lay dormant within entities from regulators to the undiscounted and micro. But after listening to my friend Aleksey's ambitions to recycle, renew, and recreate a familiar feeling (or workplace setting, per professional parlance), I would be grateful to lend an ear and a hand to anyone who is able to read between these lines, and discover an opportunity in my previous potential.

If you have any experience in Federal contract and grant writing, or interfacing with internal and external stakeholders, you could help me find a forever family. Preferable, One who loves to read, and write, for money!

That's a typo from the past that I was happy to belabor, as a "get out of jail free" card so I can pass "Go," and re-enter your good graces!

Specifically, I believe I have understated some of the opportunities that I am pursuing in a post-professional capacity. Call 'em after-work hobbies?

CAD/CAM in both additive and subtractive manufacturing fields have shown promise, with the rise of certain trends in popular desktop fabrication methods, such as 3-Di Printing. The "i" is little because of a humbled ego, looking only to compliment and complement, truly.

What are your hobbies? Any Fellow Flourishers (or, Flourish Fellows?) interested in similar ventures in paper products or reusable plastics with embedded payment authorization chips (PACs)?

I invite any, all, and especially You, to ponder the following:

-do You see scope for profitable partnerships wherein some savvy manufacturers (with years of combined experience) can be recruited, to invest in a small scale distribution business of renewable resource platforms that can provide educational inspiration, and creative outlets for our own ideas, whether they are new to this world, or have seen many of Mother Earth's ways to call us home from the Stars?

-do You forsee continued investment interest in educational intiatives aimed at promoting participation of young learners from across the learning spectrum, especially those historically underrepresented in engineering disciplines?

-do You feel fulfilling work, for authors still germinating, can begin with a new Hope, rather than old Prayers in scripts unknown?

-do You think an Angeleno partner to interface directly with a leading assembly plant in the City of Angels could benefit from your support and credibility?

Appreciate your consideration, and your reservations about letting me join the ranks of a Flourishing Foundation of good ideas (:

Finally, please feel free to email me with any interest regarding further information on:

-an LA based partner that needs help making commissioned rounds of Betsy DeVos' charter schools that are responsible for a lot of the "brains" that lost money (or worse, broke even) when oddly, the broad market's seeing a bull run for the ages on Wall St (a universe far, far away, to Yours truly).

-I can't think of a better spokesperson for the cause of formal Education than You, who have moved the same mountains of finance that I tried to move, in vain. What has touched me is your modest Midas mind, coupled with the actual weights, in your heart that turned mine into gold, by your compassionate associations!

Aleksey, great post! I think we have to separate 'networking' from 'networking events'. We literally never stop networking. I love how organic connection happens. Some of my best clients were found that way, I had no idea they needed my help until they said something and we benefited from it.

Love this and totally agree Tzvi. I have also found that it's always easier for me to focus on others when I'm in a calm place myself. Notice that this doesn't necessarily mean I have extra things in my life - but just the basics will do, and then I can look out for others!
